Final workshop of TA-8874: “Sustainable forest management to improve livelihood of local communities” was successfully held at Holiday Inn Hotel, Ulaanbaatar in 29th of May, 2018 with 70 participants from Asian Development Bank, JICA, Embassy of Japan,  MET, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Light Industry, Chamber of Commerce, FRDC, GIZ, UN REDD, FAO, MUST, SFM-NGO and other participants from Selenge aimag, Mandal soum, Tunkhel, Khuvsgul aimag, Zavkhan aimag, Bulgan aimag, Arkhangai aimag and Khentii aimag. 

Project background: The Sustainable Forest Management to Improve Livelihood of Local Communities project has been implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia between 2015 and 2018 through its Forest Research and Development Centre (FRDC). Project has been funded by Japan Fund of Poverty Reduction channeled through Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The project aimed to improve sustainable forest management through strengthening community-based forest management institutions and practices and to improve livelihoods of rural communities. The Tunkhel village of Mandal Soum in Selenge Aimag was selected as a pilot area to test project field activities focusing on three outputs:

• Output 1:    Capacity of forest management line agencies in sustainable forest management strengthened.
• Output 2:   Forest product value-chains and forest user group capacity improved.
• Output 3:   Technology for wood processing systems demonstrated.

Main objective of the workshop:

1. Review the lessons learnt by the project and assess the up-scalability of the tested practices/technologies.
2. Share/exchange information and experiences related to the project implementation for sustainable forest management.
3. Stimulate the discussions and strengthen cooperation between stakeholders in Mongolia.
4. Identify and recommend appropriate actions and way forward for sustainable forest management in Mongolia.

Expected Outcomes:

1. Increased understanding of the results of the Sustainable Forest Management to Improve Livelihood of Local Communities project.
2. Identification of technical and financial options and approaches for scaling up sustainable forest management in Mongolia.
3. Suggest follow-up actions and way forward.
